This first marker is one of the few public narratives that address Garry's later years. Though it is impossible to know the intentions of it's builders, the writing is rife with the condescending and racist language all too common decades ago. Unfortunately, elements of this "Poor Indian" trope are still common in modern narratives of Garry's life.
